It can occur at anytime, happen when its least expected and often catches the user off guard. Without warning, while surfing the internet, a window suddenly pops up on the screen and displays “A critical virus has been detected. Please click ‘fix’ to immediately resolve the problem”. Without giving it a second thought, the user clicks on Fix and the problem seems to be handled. Unfortunately, little does the user realize that this is only the beginning of bigger problems.

What Is Scareware? Scareware refers to software that uses fraudulent sales tactics which literally scares the user into thinking they must take immediate action without thinking about what they are doing. Making a user think their computer has become infected with viruses that must be fixed immediately is the most common tactic. A pop-up window which is made to appear like a Microsoft window or anti-virus program window similar to what the user already has installed on their system, warns the user to repair the problem immediately. In that moment, the user is tricked into downloading a program onto their computer after which, the real trouble begins. How Does Scareware Work? The most common tactics with scareware is using virus notifications. The message on the popup window informs the user he (or she) is under attack by a virus or that one or more viruses have been found on their computer. Once the user clicks on the fictitious message, they are then informed they will have to pay a certain amount to have the viruses repaired even though none may actually exist. More harmful scareware (such as AntiVirus XP 2010) will actually make changes to the registry to convince the user to purchase the software, in some instances even disabling many of the computer’s functions. How to Avoid Scareware The initial point of entry onto a computer with scareware is almost always an internet generated popup window. As such, the best protection against scareware is a pop-up blocker that is configured to block third-party sites (pop-ups from outside of the computer). The message here, as with most harmful programs out there is to have good defenses; a properly configured firewall, a good registry cleaner, reputable anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. By having and maintaining a good compliment of guardian programs running, one can rest assured that most scareware won’t be much of a scare at all. Keep in mind however that programmers of these types of software have only one desire, to scam innocent victims out of money. They are continuously looking for new ways to beat the defenses of computers and elicit kneejerk reactions out of the user. So remember, if security software is already installed on the computer, the simplest method of dealing with potential scareware is to shutdown the window from the Task Manager and then run a full scan. By remaining calm, it is the user who ultimately remains the computers final and best defense.
