Slovenia is a small country situated in east central Europe. It once formed part of the old country of Yugoslavia. It is a very friendly country with lots of opportunities for photography. In the western part of the country lie the tourist towns of Bled, Bohinj and Kranska Gora all of which are not far from the countries capital, Ljubljana. The area has many excellent restaurants and travel throughout the area is reasonably easy. Getting to Slovenia by air is also easy either flying into the airport at Ljubljana or Salzburg airport in Austria both of which require a short road journey to get to this area.
Slovenia is a country where outdoor pursuits are taken seriously and why not as there are tremendous opportunities for the following activities, hiking, gentle walking, mountain climbing, canoeing, rowing and orienteering to name a few. In fact the Rowing World Championships in 2011 will be held on Lake Bled. Many parts of Slovenia have that rural feel to them although there are some industrial cities which are located mainly in the east of the country.
Anyone who likes getting out into the country cannot fail to be impressed by the tremendous vistas and panoramas which the western part of the country has to offer. The photography opportunities are limitless. If your passion is for mountains then there are plenty in the Julian Alps to keep you busy. Mount Triglav is the highest and is situated in the national park. Mount Vogel is another popular mountain to go up. It is possible to take a cable car part of the way up and once out of the cable car you are confronted with many mountain paths which you can walk. Waterfalls or Slap's as they are called are bountiful as well and these run into rivers which very clear.
As with alpine landscapes , wild flowers are plentiful and small farms are abundant. Some of these farms still employ the traditional method in drying the hay and have not resorted to the harvesting in bales as is found in many other parts of Europe. Also the gathering of honey is popular and multicoloured hives are used, some of which are placed on the backs of lorries which make them mobile.
Slovenia was once part of the vast Austro-Hungarian empire and a stud for the famous Lipizzaner horses can be found at Lipica. Close by are caves which can be explored. Slovenia has a small shoreline on the Adriatic sea which offers photography of a different nature.
Hopefully you will agree that no matter what your interest the opportunity to take stunning photographs of this jewel of a country exists.
